Overview

Following the sacking of Tony Pulis the board appointed unknown Dutch manager Johan Boskamp. Boskamp promised to play good attacking football and he brought a number of foreign players in from the continent. He broke the clubs record signing when he purchased Sambégou Bangoura from Standard Liège but Bangoura had many problems with discipline despite making a promising start to his Stoke career.

Stoke started the season playing good football regularly outplaying teams and gaining some good results. However Boskamp's real problem was in defence as Stoke let in far too many goals. There was eight matches in which Stoke conceded three goals or more with three home games finishing 3–0 to the opposition. After a match at Coventry there was an argument amongst the management which lead to the resignation of Jan de Koning.

Stoke finished in 13th place in the table with no danger of being involved in a promotion or relegation fight. At the end of the season there was no surprise to see that Johan Boskamp leave after his contract had expired.

With the Icelandic board seemingly failed in their last ditch attempt to secure promotion they put the club up for sale. Former chairman Peter Coates brought the club back from the Icelanders and reinstalled Tony Pulis as manager.
